Description

“Unrivaled strength to weight ratio - the perfect tent for our guided snow camping expeditions." -Tom Bartlett, co-founder, The Adventure Gene, and SlingFin Guide Partner.

The WindSaber redefines what’s possible for a lightweight alpine tent. At just 5 pounds, the WindSaber’s strength is comparable to that of many tents that weigh twice as much. Light enough to carry to the high alpine and strong enough to stay there as long as you want, the WindSaber is a go-anywhere, do-everything alpine tent for core mountain folk. Whether you’re ticking the Cassin or skiing the JMT, you’ll rest easy knowing your tent can handle whatever the mountains throw your way.

The WindSaber’s unprecedented strength-to-weight ratio comes from our patented WebTruss system. The WebTruss is made up of sleeves into which you insert the tent poles. Unlike traditional pole sleeves that are sewn into the tent body, the WebTruss is detachable, allowing the poles to be completely set up before attaching the tent body. The result is a tent that sets up very easily in high-wind conditions (unlike a tent with traditional pole sleeves), but with far better stability than modern clip-style tents.

The interior of the WindSaber is shaped to maximize usable space and has more pockets than you can shake a stick at. Plenty of o-rings provide internal guyline compatibility as well as ample places to hang things. Two zippered mesh/ripstop double doors on the other side provide quick entry and exit and won’t get caked with spindrift. To vent the WindSaber, open the drawstring vent at the foot of the tent, which has a corresponding vent in the tent’s fly. The drawstring vent also has a mesh layer which lets you vent the tent even when it’s buggy out. Crack open the top of the door, and you have a nice cross breeze that keeps condensation to a minimum. The vestibule openings each feature a kickstand vent.

SlingFin WindSaber — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the WindSaber’s intended use?

The WindSaber is our maximum strength lightweight alpine tent for the most extreme conditions and most ambitious human-powered objectives in the world. If strength at a minimal weight penalty is your top priority, this is your tent. It’s for the most exposed climbs, the most remote objectives, and the most brutal conditions nature can dish out. If your planned itinerary is longer than your forecast window, or if you’re deep enough in the backcountry that you have no choice but to ride out everything you encounter, the strength provided by the WindSaber will provide a welcome margin of safety. With an impressive minimum weight of just under 5lb, the WindSaber delivers more strength for the weight of any tent in the world. It’s probably overkill for 95% of people, but for the last 5% it’s the only tent that will get the job done.

What is the WebTruss, and how does it work?

The WebTruss is part of our secret sauce to give the WindSaber its unprecedented strength-to-weight ratio. It makes our tents significantly stronger at a minimal weight penalty by reducing flex in the poles. Tensioning the WebTruss puts compression on the poles, locking them down and giving the WindSaber the strength of a much heavier tent. The WebTruss also enables easy high-wind setup by allowing the user to fully set up the poles in the WebTruss before attaching the tent body, minimizing the wind profile when the tent is at its most vulnerable as the poles are being inserted.

Can I pitch the WindSaber without the WebTruss?

Yes, the WindSaber comes with a set of tent pole clips from DAC that can be used in place of the WebTruss to save weight when the extra strength of the WebTruss isn’t needed.

How does the WindSaber manage condensation?

The WindSaber has numerous ventilation features to keep condensation to a minimum. It has a drawstring thru-vent on the fly, dual KickStand vents on the vestibules, and full mesh doors on the tent body that can be fully sealed against spindrift.

Does the WindSaber need seam sealing?

No, the WindSaber is ready to go! Between the silicone-coated fly fabric combined with the non-wicking thread and double needle seam construction, we have found that the WindSaber fly does not need to be sealed. The tent body floor is fully taped and ready to go.

How do I use my trekking poles with the WindSaber to strengthen the tent?

The WindSaber’s OutRigger system allows you to brace the top cross pole using your trekking or ski poles. Simply wrap the velcro straps around your trekking pole handles and extend the trekking pole tips to the ground. This will provide improved stability in wind and greatly increased snow loading capacity. To see the OutRigger system in action, click here. The WindSaber can handle enough snow loading with the OutRigger system engaged to fully bury the tent. It’s extremely important to ensure you maintain ventilation during heavy snowfall to avoid asphyxiation. Remember, if your tent gets completely buried, clean the snow off from the top first!

Can I get repair supplies and spare parts for the WindSaber?

Yes! We are passionate about keeping our tents in the field as long as possible and have spare pole sections, repair fabric, and repair adhesive available on our website. Even if a specific part isn’t listed on our spare parts page we can almost always find the part you need. Just reach out to us and we’ll get you sorted out. Depending on inventory levels we are often able to sell individual components of the tent if you manage to wear something out or damage it beyond repair.
