If you find yourself frequently pushing the limits of your Portal 2, this replacement pole set replaces the standard 8.7mm DAC NFL pole set with a significantly beefier 10.65mm PL pole set. This is the same pole type we use for our CrossBow and WindSaber mountaineering tents and they can handle some serious weather. Using the heavy duty pole set instead of the standard adds 5.8oz compared to the standard pole set. Please note that the heavy duty pole set does not use a swivel like the standard pole set.

Good idea but questions.

This is a great idea since the usual DAC poles used on most freestanding tent can easily snap in strong winds. So....1. why not offer this as an OPTION instead of the standard poles, and 2. when will they be available?

There are two main reasons we don't offer the Portal 2 as an option with the PL poles: First, if you're only using the heavy duty poles and don't need the versatility of two poles sets, chances are you'd be better off with a dedicated four-season tent. The second is that it would be an inventory management nightmare- we receive tents complete from our factory, with poles, so we can't just order a bunch of tents without poles and then a bunch of pole sets and mix and match. If we did that, we would get slammed by import duty and the prices would have to go up by about 20-30%. We're currently waiting for the pole ETA from DAC and I'll update the website as soon as we have it!

WOULD RECOMMEND! Regardless Of Environment

For an insignificant 164 grams extra these poles are a MUST HAVE for anyone taking their Portal 2 into any sort of alpine or mid/high-wind environment. Couple this heavy-duty pole set with the ingenious trekking pole outrigger system and I can attest to the fact that the Portal 2 won’t budge, even in some of the most dire weather! We used this system over the course of nearly 90 nights hiking and camping in Patagonia (known for its notoriously high winds!) and have had some of our best night sleeps knowing that when we wake up we won’t be the ones with a flattened tent, as we witnessed on numerous occasions. We don’t feel the need to revert to the original pole set as the weight really is insignificant vs. the peace of mind gained, and set-up is still very easy. Happy trekking.
